The now legendary Muhammed Ali stunned the world.
As a 4-1 underdog, he defeated the ‘Goliath’ to his ‘David’; George Foreman.
What a fight!
Having dazzled with his speed, Ali’s traditional fast hands eventually lost their effect and Foreman, famous for his incredible power, started laying into Ali with his well known ‘haymakers’.
Trapped in a corner, it looked like it was all over for Ali…but, what he knew (and what I know!) is that it all comes back to basics.
Yeah, you can learn how to showboat and lift weights in the hope of giving it the biggin', BUT, when all is said and done, without nailing two fundamentals - you aint ever gonna get anywhere as a boxer.
The difference between world elite boxers and not so world elite boxers?
They practice the basics over and over again.
So - how does the story end?
Well, Ali used his secret tactic ‘rope-a-dope’, that relied on the absolute basics of having a solid stance interchanged with proper footwork.
Staying EXACTLY where Foreman wanted him but using the airtight shielding that comes from a masterly stance, Ali let Foreman THINK he was winning and let him wear himself out by throwing MASSIVE punches to Ali’s well protected body and head.
Then, when the moment was right, Ali busted out his classic footwork and pummeled the exhausted Foreman in one of the greatest moments of sporting history.
Simple. Always. Wins.
